About Manzanita

The small, oceanfront city of Manzanita, permanent population less than 600
residents, lies on a seven-mile peaceful beach on the north coast of Oregon.
Mazanita (“little apple” in Spanish) is approximately two hours west of
Portland and an easy drive to other coastal communities: Cannon Beach and
Seaside to the north or Rockaway Beach and Tillamook to the south.

Activities and attractions

Manzanita is bordered by two state parks, both picturesque examples of
coastal temperate rain forest that offer fantastic opportunities for wildlife
watching: Oswald West State Park to the north and Nehalem Bay State Park to the south. Oswald West State Park contains Neahkahnie Mountain (a three-mile, roundtrip hike to the summit), the Oregon Coast Trail, Smuggler’s Cove and acres of spectacular old-growth, Oregon coast forest. Smugglers Cove is the home of a local legend of a murdered African sailor whose ghost guards the treasure he was buried with, somewhere near the foot of Neahkahnie Mountain. Smugglers Cove is also the site of Short Sands, one of the most popular surf destinations in the Northwest. Nehalem Bay State Park contains Nehalem Beach and the bay itself, separated from the ocean by a four-mile long sand spit. The park offers playgrounds; interpretive programs; horse, hiking and bicycle trails; boating; crabbing; fishing and a beautiful miles-long white sand beach. Bring binoculars in the spring and fall to see migrating gray and humpback whales from viewpoint overlooks along the Pacific Coast Highway.

In Manzanita, rent or purchase surfboards, boogie boards or skim boards and gear at Manzanita Bikes & Boards, which also rents bicycles, recumbent beach trikes and a beach wheelchair designed for use on sand, including a size available for
children. At Jetty Fishery, rent boats and gear for boating, fishing, clamming, crabbing and other activities. Rental boats are permitted to beach on the Nehalem Bay State
Park spit and crabbing can be done off the dock. Reserve a place on a guided trail ride with Northwest Equine Outfitters, which advertises packages for all skill levels, and see the parks and coastline from horseback.

Food and Dining

Cook in the kitchen yourself or try one of the area’s many restaurants, from casual local favorite, Big Wave Cafe, bakery and deli Bread and Ocean, fine dining at the Terra Cotta Cafe or treat yourself to an evening of gourmet, organic French cuisine at the Nehalem River Inn. If you do prefer dining by your own hand, Mother Nature’s Natural Foods on Laneda Avenue, Bread and Ocean Bakery (see above) and the Nehalem Winery can all provide the ingredients of a wonderful home-cooked meal. A must see while in the city is the best known grocery store in the town fittingly named “The Little Apple”.

Shopping

Manzanita does not feature chain or large retail stores. It is the home of many small, speciality boutiques, galleries and locally-owned stores whose wares are as unique as the town itself. Laneda Avenue bisects town to dead-end at the beach and is lined with specialty shops, including Unfurl, an ecologically-minded clothing store, bookstores, restaurants and cafes, and art galleries.
